let's see, nothing much new to report...oh yeah almost forgot: i'm retiring at the end of the month...just felt the time is right...didn't want FAB to drag me from the building kicking and screaming...so, leave on my own terms...

so many things to tell you about my years in radio, all of the highlights, there have been very few lows...that's what happens when you get to work in a business you love with people you love...my final day on the air will be friday january 27th...i have no idea what i'll be doing...but it'll be something...

on other matters: saw meryl streep in "The Iron Lady" this week...WOW...as usual, streep is fantastic and will likely snare another oscar nomination...she already has 16! it's based on the life of british prime minister margaret thatcher...

anyway, a brief blog today...

seems like i'm just getting used to writing 2O11 and it's already 2O12, what's up with that? hope everyone had a great christmas and new year's eve...was at my mother-in-law's place downtown, so we walked to the forks for the fireworks on new year's eve...got home at 1:3Oam...late for me...

is it just me, or is the world junior hockey tournament a bust this year? i mean, there's not much competition is there? team-usa? please...the winnipeg jets on the other hand are one entertaining team...win or lose, they're always fun to watch, especially that game against the leafs...january could be a tough month, the jets have just four home games...

resolutions? i promise to eat more and avoid exercise...i mean, eat less and exercise more...i also promise to avoid as much meaningless crap out to hollywood as i can...i no longer care about jennifer aniston's dating problems, who caused the j-lo/mark anthony split or what kim kardashian or her wretched family is doing... it's just not that important...just sayin

monday 19 december

was not at the jets game on "teemu night" on the 17th, watched the game at home and how exciting was that? selanne is just a class-act...like bobby hull, teemu always signed autographs when he was here from 1992 to 1996 and that hasn't changed...the game worked-out perfectly: teemu got two assists, was third star and the jets won 5-3...it'll be a long time before a player for a visiting team gets that kind of welcome...

bought a new computer...gave my son our old one and by old, i mean 2-years and we got a mac for the first time...gonna take awhile to get used to it...i told the guy at the apple store, this must be the easiest sale he's ever made because i just pointed to a computer and said "that one" please...now all i have to do is figure it out...shouldn't take me more than a year...

every year i say "i'm gonna do my christmas shopping early" and it never happens...this year is no exception and it's been a little tough getting ino the spirit this year because at the end of June, my wife's uncle died, about a week later, my mom passed and in October, my cousin died...now, my father-in-law is sick with cancer and he's stuck in hospital...going to try to make this christmas as much fun as usual, but there will be empty chairs at the dinner-table...

first day in the studio since last wednesday...the FAB crew was at st. vital centre last thursday, friday and saturday for the 29th annual "Christmas-Miracle"...the money and toys we gathered thanks to our listeners, never ceases to amaze me...more than-65-thousand-dollars and-55-hundred toys! awesome...

how about "Prince" at MTS-Centre? great show...he played for about-2-and-a-half hours...most of the audience was on its feet for the whole concert...not me...no matter how great a show is, i have to sit, but not all of the time...i was standing and appluading in section-1O4, row-5, seat-16...Prince had the crowd in the palm of his hand...one of the best shows i've seen...

went out and bought our christmas tree...an artificial one would do me fine, but at our house that is not allowed...happy wife, happy life...

christmas will be different this year: my mom passed away in july...first time we won't be seeing her over the holidays...her death was sad of course, but not tragic...she was-91-and she was healthy for about-9O-of those years...

i'll be blogging at least once more before christmas...

here we are, hours away from the grey cup and while i watch the big game every year, it sure means a lot more when the bombers are involved...seems like all "the experts" are picking the lions to win, so it's kind of nice being the underdog because no one expects that much...good luck to the blue bombers tonight...

been on holidays all week and it's back to work tomorrow...as usual, December will be a crazy month...hard to believe but the "Christmas Miracle" is just about here...we'll be at St. Vital Centre thursday december 8th through saturday the 1Oth...FAB will be gathering toys and cash for the Christmas Cheer Board...the board provides about 2O-thousand hampers each year to families who otherwise wouldn't have much on Christmas...many more details to follow very soon...

been hearing about some people having "seizures" while watching the latest "Twilight" movie...seems some scenes are that intense...i get the same feeling whenever i see adam sandler try to act...

if you are fan of the tv series "Walking Dead", don't forget tonight is the last show for a while...it'll be back but apparently not for a few months...AMC officially calls it the "midseason finale"...anyway, it's a good show...

Can't do this blog without mentioning the idiot Kim Kardashian...married, for 72-days? what is wrong with her? She admits she got "caught up in all the hoopla" surrounding her bone-headed wedding...but as someone said, there's nothing worse than a happy marriage for a reality tv-show and that, of course will continue...

In the sports department: as of this writing, the blue bombers are preparing for their final regular season game...there will be a home playoff game, don't know when though...it might be November 13, it might be November 2O...be nice to get the bye, all Winnipeg has to do is beat Calgary this weekend...

tickets for "Prince" are on-sale later this week..never seen him before...tickets for his December 8 show at MTS-Centre should go fast...party like it's, well, you know the rest...

come see us this Saturday at centre court Polo Park...we are doing a radio-thon for St. Amant Centre from 1Oam to 6pm...

So, the first Winnipeg Jets game of the 2011-2012 season has come and gone...had the pleasure of being at MTS-Centre for that game...to say it was loud, is an understatement...kinda funny because after all the anticipation, didn't take long to to realize, this is for real now! It didn't really matter that the Jets lost because after all, it was game one...the honeymoon will last for awhile, but not forever...

Have you been following the protests on Wall Street? I went to have a look but I got lost, went to Erin Street by mistake...

I've been following "dancing with the stars" more closely than usual this season...Since I took part in "dancing with celebrities" earlier this year, I've come to realize what hard work it really is and how inept I am...My favorite part of the show is the judge's comments...one of the contestants was told "it was like childbirth, painful at the start and enjoyable once it's over"...ouch!

Have you been following "the X-factor"? a bit underwhelming don't you think? I love Simon Cowell but the show is too much like "American-Idol"...after all, Paula Abdul is also involved...L.A. Reid is all right, but Nicole what's-her-name is boring...the beauty part is, I don't have to watch do I?

What are you more excited about? the provincial election or the start of the NHL season? both events will make you happy, right? Should be quite the Thanksgiving weekend this year, starting on thursday October 6th...that's the start of the hockey-season and it all begins with a party at The Forks and culminates with the Jets first game against Monreal on the 9th...if you have a ticket to that game and you can't use it, let me know...yeah right!

back to the election for a moment: latest poll, if you believe in polls, has the NDP ahead of the Conservatives by 9 points and just like the federal election, the Liberals are a distant third and that can't be good...they have just the one MLA, leader Jon Gerrard...

Getting a little concerned about the Blue Bombers...the team has lost three of its last four games and the Als are here this week...Buck Pierce is hurt, Alex Brink is hurt and we have newbie Justin Goltz stepping-in at quarterback...after the Montreal game, the bombers have two straight road games and then the Als are back again...not easy...

Finally got around to watching "Bridesmaids", the funniest movie i've seen in a long time... Kristen Wiig of "Saturday Night Live" is the main star and co-writer...well worth seeing...it's available on DVD...at the theatres, "Moneyball" with Brad Pitt is quite good...it's based on the true story of a major league baseball team owner and how a team without much money competes with the teams that have endless amounts of money...

first of all, let me state the obvious: like the Beach Boys song of the same name, this is our "Endless Summer"...no one is asking "hot enough for you"? in September, it's a bonus...

when i took-up the game of golf about thirty years ago, i was shooting between 11O and 12O...was out at Larter's last weekend, shot 115! not a lot of improvement over the years...the difference now: i don't seem to care as much...would like to shoot a lower score, but without practice, that's not going to happen...

saw the movie "Contagion" this week...have to admit with a cast featuring matt damon, jude law, kate winslet and gwyneth palrow, i was expecting more...it's about a nasty virus and people start dying...so, you know some will survive, some won't...plays like a one-hour drama on tv, except it's 1O5-minutes...but, see it for yourself and make-up your own mind...other FAB premieres coming-up: "Dolphin-Tale" and "Moneyball", a story about baseball...

having fun with our contest: "Beatles-Love" in las vegas...i've seen this cirque de soleil production twice and it is FABulous...we have 16-trips for two to give away...we play three times a day, so your chances of qualifying are pretty good...if you win, you can visit my money at several casinos...

wouldn't you agree? the summer of 2O11 has been amazing...in no particular order: the nhl returns...the bombers are off to their best start in years...the goldeyes finished the regular season with the most wins the team has ever had...it's been warm and mosquitos are few and far between...i mean, it's been a perfect summer, except for the river walk, but that's another story for another blog...

all of us here at FAB are excited to be offering trips to las vegas to see cirque du soleil's "the beatles love" at the mirage hotel and casino...we did this contest in the spring and it turned-out to be very popular...there are now 16 trips, twice as many as before...winners will stay at one of my favorite places, "bally's", right on the strip and a short walk to the mirage...thanks to our sponsors "expedia cruise ship centres" and record label EMI...we start qualifiying this coming tuesday, the 6th, right after the labor day weekend...each qualifier gets a beatles cd..

it's great to be playing music of the 6Os and 7Os but i find i'm getting further and further away from today's music...sorry, but i don't care if lady gaga dresses like a man at the MTV awards and although i'm happy for her, beyonce's pregnancy is not all that interesting...now, kim kardashian marrying what's-his-name, that's interesting...

speaking of the kardashians, kim's brother rob is on the up-coming season of "dancing with the stars", as is nancy grace and chaz bono...isn't he with U2?

we are closing-in on 2O days of at least 3O degree days this summer...the incredible weather continues... peaked at 37 yesterday, a record-setter...warmest day in winnipeg in more than 15-years...

off to winnipeg-beach this weekend...going to freeload off another friend...haven't been to this place before and after we stay there, they may not want us back...

"wicked" is now playing at the concert hall...FAB gave-away quite a few tickets...i'd be interested in hearing what you thought of this pre-quel to "the wizard of oz"...checked-out the da vinci exhibit and that guy was really something...did you know he invented the wankel rotary engine? kidding...it's on til october 23rd...

hard to believe, september arrives next week! perhaps the 9th month of the year will be as nice as the 8th... don't want to bum you out but autumn arrives september 23rd...

FYI: beau, tom and frazier reunite monday morning on FAB...all holidays seem to be done...

today is my final day of two weeks off...to say it's been nice, is a bit of an understatement...the first week was spent with my wife, who also had the week off...visited friends at victoria beach, golfed a couple of tmes, went out to dinner and stayed-up late (11pm!)
the weather, as you know, was exceptional and no skeeters...

second week of holiday was spent in the basement, watching our new tv...ok, i did manage to get outside...golfed at the "princess auto" tournament and got a round in with my two sons and some of their friends, part of a bachelor party for mike mitchell...stayed-up late that night,(midnight!)...

monday, my first day back at work, beau and i have a golf tournament at the new southwood course in st. norbert...it's always an adventure coming back to work because you never know how the computers are going to work,,,thanks to chris reid for filling-in once again...

so, five months from today is christmas...no wonder summer seems so short when there are people like me remnding you how far away christmas is...

spent the weekend in gimli...we were visiting friends and while we were there, took in some of the movies at the film festival...there were some good things and some experimental things there and that's the idea of a festival...see some stuff you normally wouldn't...

the people we were visiting have a norwegian background...so we watched the coverage of what was happening over there...stuff like that makes you numb doesn't it? i mean, what can you say?

amy winehouse passed-away and like so many others, was just 27 and so messed-up... ironically her best known song is "rehab", a place she was in and out of many times...no one seemed surprised she died...some wondered how she lived as long as she did...

going to be on holidays next week for sure and perhaps the week after that...no special plans but i have days left...use 'em or lose 'em...

not one to complain but...it's hot...way hot...heading into our 5th straight day of 3O plus degrees and today is supposed to be the hottest, 36C...what a day to golf...13th annual W.K.Chan tournament at glendale...i'll be the one moving slow...real slow...

serial-bride jennifer lopez is single...her third marriage ended-up like the first two...it ended...kind of sad, there are children involved this time...marc anthony still reminds me of "golum" in "the lord of the rings"...

anyone excited that avril lavigne is coming to winnipeg? just askin'...she's due at MTS-Centre on the 14th of october...

be on holidays the first week of august...no plans this year...

my mom passed-away on friday july 8..she was 91...that's a good, long run...first of all, thanks to all the messages my facebook-friends sent...i read every one and it meant a lot...also, thanks to my friend and co-worker beau...he was with me when i got the news and it was great to have him there...

ruth milroy's funeral is on tuesday morning...my brother colin and i have planned a small service, just for family members...she had a great life and was healthy except for the final year...she had a stroke last summer, stayed in hospital for three and a half months, then moved into the convalescent home on hugo street, off corydon...great staff there...

i have one quick story to explain what kind of person my mother was: in downtown winnipeg, she put money in one of those two-headed parking meters...she parked in one spot but put two quarters in the wrong meter...instead of moving her car, she wrote a note and left it on her windshield...got a ticket of course but had a chance to explain to the parking-police and they tore it up...i think they figured no one would make-up a story like that...

what a crazy weekend...started with my wife's uncle's funeral on thursday...mel mcdonald was 87, great guy who had a great life...married to isabel for 66-years...

on friday, canada day, my wife's birthday AND my son kyle announces his engagement to kim feriolo...they've been dating for more than 2-years, so this was not a huge surprise, but it still sends you into a spin...

looks like the wedding will be sometime next summer, so lots of time to panic and try to find some money...i told kim's dad that i'm a traditional kind of guy, so the bride's parents should pay for everything...he didn't laugh...

as the groom-to-be's parents, i don't believe maureen and i will be too involved, other than keeping the cheque-book handy...i expect there will be a social sometime down the line...i'll keep you imformed...

a lot of you have been to a high school reunion...mine was over the weekend: 5Oth anniversary of River East Collegiate...WOW...good thing we all had to wear name-tags...as you can imagine, i haven't changed, but everyone else has...it was really special because my wife maureen is also a former-student and we ran into a ton of people we haven't seen in years...

question: why do some of the teachers now look to be the same age as me...not fair...what a mammoth job organizing this thing...first, you have to get in touch with as many alumni as you can...then you have to line-up the dinner at the convention centre, the open house at the school and the meet-and-greet at victoria inn... props to jim dare, moira honey and my pal heidi bock and my classy co-host sylvia kuzyk...

in other news: the chipmans pretty much had to call their hockey team the "jets"...although "true-north" really has no ties to the jets, the chipmans are a savvy family and realized "jets" seemed to be the logical and sentimental choice...bring on the "merch"...

july 1st is my wife's birthday...she's still younger than canada...

first day of summer...doesn't feel too much different than the last day of spring...we are a couple of days away from my high school reunion...river east collegiate in north kildonan...looking forward to seeing some o the old familiar faces from days gone by...begins with a meet & greet at the victoria inn on friday, followed by an open house a the school on saturday afternoon, then the gala at convention centre on saturday night, featuring ron paley's big-band...

one of my all-time favorite guitarists is playing a concert in winnipeg...jeff beck comes to pantages on saturday october 22...i don't know how he gets some of the sounds out of that strat...also just announced, the moody blues at pantages on friday september 3O...

beau and i played at the rainbow society golf tournament this week at niakwa..."mr. hockey" gordie howe was there posing for pictures and shaking hands...what an honor to meet him...great hockey player and just a real nice, unassuming guy...in his 8Os now, he looks great!

got back this week from a week in palm springs california and a couple of days in FABulous las vegas nevada...friends of mine just bought a place in palm springs so we had a chance to see it and stay there...OMG...what a beautiful home in a gorgeous area called la qunita...the boys were allowed to hit vegas for two nights and we did our best to help the local economy...

of course nothing happened while we were away...only the NHL making the formal announcement they are coming back! watched the days events unfold on the tv-screen in front of us on the airplane...not the same as being there, but it had to do...(personally, it doesn't matter what they call the new team)

as of this writing, our vegas winners were on their way to see cirque's presentation of the "beatles love" at the mirage hotel...seen it twice...it truly is fantastic...

i must be the only person to visit palm springs and come home with a cold...must have caught it from the air-conditioning...you're outside all day and come inside and it's freezing... not healthy...

friday may 26 2011...

as of this posting, no word on when and if the NHL is returning to winnipeg...lots of speculation mind you...endless hope, which is a good thing...haven't seen winnipeg so excited since word came that IKEA was coming here...fingers crossed and for the record, i don't really care too much what our team is going to be called, so long as there is one...

radio stations live and die by ratings...two or three times a year, surveys are put in the mail with the hope we get a lot of them back filled with the right answers...the results came out this week and thanks to you the listener, FAB's debut was strong...we only hope to get better...

looking forward to something pretty rare next month: the 5Oth anniversary of my high school in north kildonan, River East Collegiate...there are two days of festivities, starting at the victoria inn on friday june 24th, an open-house at the school on the afternoon of the 25th and the gala at the convention centre on saturday night...sylvia kuzyk and myself are looking forward to hosting the party...ron paley's bg band will be playing and there will be a lot of squniting going-on along with the popular question "remember me"?...we'll talk soon...

25-years ago this month, i began working at 1445 pembina highway...25 YEARS!!!

how did this happen? still not sure...incredible really because i'm only 37...yeah right...began my work here reading the news on david mann's morning show on Q94FM...after doing that for a few months, i moved over to CFRW and worked with kevin mcgowan...that, as we say, didn't work out...but CHUM kept me on and i worked 9 to 5 weekdays, doing three newscasts a day...came back to Q94 in 1989 when a young man named "beau" arrived...as you know, we've been together ever since...

whether on Q or BOB-FM or FAB 94.3, the experience has been amazing...for many of those years, i've had the pleasure of working with some talented women: caroline, dez and frazier...never thought someone would want to work with us twice, but after a 9-year break, frazier came to work with beau and i for a second time in 2009...

it's not work if you enjoy coming to work every day...i do...thanks to our listeners, i'll be back at work tomorow...talk soon

the culmination of weekly practices for the last four months came to a close the other night with the 5th annual "dancing with celebrities"...it was a FABulous evening with a great crowd and a lot of friends who came to watch me "dance"...my partner jennifer west is the best and the most patient woman in the world...congrats to all the other competitors: pay chen, polly craik, carolin vesely and paul lapolice and the great crew from SMD...joanne kelly of shaw-tv was our emcee and you can watch the proceedings, friday the 13th at 6:3Opm

less than three weeks to go before the U2 show...whenever there's an outdoor show, i tend to get nervous but i must admit, we've been lucky of late...eagles, bon jovi and ac/dc were all stadium shows and the weather cooperated...i guess U2 only plays here when there's a flood... there last winnipeg apperance was in 1997...that was also the last time the rolling stones were here...i could see them again...

in a few weeks, 8 lucky FAB listeners and their guests will be in FABulous las vegas nevada
to see "beatles-love: cirque du soleil"...i can't describe in words how fantastic the show is, i've seen it twice and could easily see it again...matter of fact, i'll be in vegas soon and who knows, i just might see it again...cheers

post-election thoughts: welcome back to canada quebec...the bloc quebecois can now hold their caucus meetings in a car...the party went from 47 seats to 4...now way to sugar-coat that...the liberals had their worst showing, ever...before the election i figured two leaders would be leaving...i was right, but i didn't know which two leaders...next up: provincial election in october...

played at a charity "texas hold 'em" tournament this week...now i know why i don't play poker for a living... i'm just not very good...it was at mcphillips station...the charity was lyle bauer's "never alone"...

"dancing with celebrities" on saturday may 7 at the fairmont...found something else i'm not good at, dancing... been taking lessons for months with my partner jennifer west...god bless her patience...should be a fun night with proceeds to society for manitobans with disabilities...

at the millenium centre, myself, along with beau and frazier will be presenting awards to first and second year students of the creative communications course at red river college...last year i told one of the students i graduated from that very course...she asked "what year"?...i said "1976"...her response, "wow"...

welcome to my blog once again...as of this writing, the federal election is two weeks away...are you excited about it? do you plan to vote? have you had enough? of all the party leaders, you have to be envious of bloc quebecois leader gilles duceppe...he gets to campaign in just one province...and he gets federal money....sweet

is it me, or are there an awful lot of of food shows on television...i do enjoy a couple of them though: "diners, drve-throughs and dives" is fun and while it's incredibily unhealthy, "man versus food"...the host ends the show trying to eat some monstrosity...the other day he ate a sundae called "the kitchen sink:...it contained two gallons of ice cream...two gallons! it was awesome and he won the challenge...

getting prepared for my debut as a dancer at "dancing with celebrities"...it's a fund-raiser for society for manitobans with disabilities...for those who don't know me...the milroy men are not known for their dancing prowess...our radio station has been involved for years and to avoid dancing, i've been on a panel of judges but one of last year's dancers, doug spiers of winnipeg free press, threw down the gauntlet and said i should dance...now he's one of the judges... should be a fun night...saturday may 7 at the fairmont...

steve martin, his banjo and his band perform in winnipeg on july 27...must tell you my one and only steve martin story...been a big fan for years...we're in vancouver having dinner...across from us, sitting with another man and a woman is steve martin...my wife gets all excited, works-up the courage to go over there with her camera and asks if it's all right to take a picture...he says, "this is a private dinner and yes i would mind"...hey big star, we sat through "father of the bride 2", what does it hurt to have your picture taken...now, in his defence, he must get asked all the time for pictures and autographs, but c'mon steve...(at least he said good night to our table when he left)

are you following "dancing with the stars"? can't help myself, i've been watching it with a little extra interest because i'm taking part in "dancing with celebrities" on may 7...it's a fundraiser for SMD...for a guy who doesn't dance much, the lessons have been enlightening...it's tough to dance properly...others taking part this year include pay chen of breakfast-tv, carolin veseley of the free press, paul lapolice of the blue bombers and businesswoman polly craik...tix at dancingwithcelebrities.ca or 975-3084...
